Tufted - tufted carpet accounts for 95% of all carpet produced, and takes about 1 hour to make a roll compared to 8 hours to weave a roll (i.e. Wilton, Axminster etc). To make tufted carpet hundreds of needles threaded with yarn are pushed through a backing fabric to form loops or tufts which may be left as loops or cut. An adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a backing is glued to add strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can be created using various techniques.
Twist - The most popular style of carpet. The yarn is twisted and often heat set to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Berber / Level Loop / Multi-level Loop - the name Berber originated from the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia where handmade bulky wool carpet were made by them. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or blends of these fibres which gives a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in many colours and may be flecked and can be of level loops or multi-level loops, making them flexible and durable with a casual appearance. The multi-level loop is especially forgiving for marks and stains. This style of carpet should be avoided with cats, dogs as they can catch their claws in the loops and the carpet may run.Saxony - These are made of twisted yarn which is usually heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form an elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks and are more suitable for occasional rooms in the home.
Velvet - sometimes called velour or plush. These have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm in heigth which is sheared to give a smooth finish, the yarn ends blend together which enhances the overall finish. These carpet tend to 'shade' with heavy use. Foot prints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because the fibres lay in different directions reflecting the light differently.
Freize - similar to Saxony but yarn is more tightly twisted and heat set. These have dense low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Freize carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt making them suitable for high traffic areas.
Cut and Loop - some of the pile is cut and some is left as loops giving a variety of surface textures and patterns. This style of carpet is excellent for hiding footprints and stains and is good for high traffic areas and general purpose in the home.
Shag Pile - The pile is 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose. The surface tends to flatten easily and lacks durability.
Shag Pile - has a distinctive long pile and the texture is casual and loose appearance (Shaggy).
Bonded - sometimes called fibre-bonded or fusion bonded. These are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material (the fibres are not stitched into the backing). The technique is principally used for commercial installations (schools, offices etc available as carpet tiles or sheet carpet material.
Woven - Axminster - Wilton - Flat Weave - Today's production is small but produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminsters - the pile is inserted in to the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating 'u' shaped tufts to give a velvety appearance. This process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used. Wilton is produced in a similar way to axminsters, the main difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. Flat weave is similar to Wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to create a flatter more textured effect.
